"Voices from and about Ukraine. Reflecting on the Russian Invasion of Ukraine One Year After"

On 24 February 2022, Russia began a military invasion of Ukraine, in a major escalation of the conflict that had started in 2014. What was intended as a quick and victorious march on Kyiv, turned out to be a gross miscalculation by the undemocratic, corrupt, and
nationalist Putin’s regime. A year of a very difficult war has created a new political and economic situation in Europe and the world. It also tested Ukraine’s political leadership, social cohesion, infrastructure, and economy. It generated a refugee crisis of significant
proportions, and it tragically altered lives of many ordinary citizens of Ukraine. This panel is intended as an update on the ongoing catastrophic war and a collective attempt to make sense of the year of this conflict. The panel’s co-organizers asked UIC history majors to submit their questions for the panelists. The invited panelists—scholars of and from Ukraine and Canada—will address some of these questions and raise new ones.

Panelists:

ORYSIA KULICK, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Studies, University of Manitoba
BOGDAN PAVLISH, PhD candidate in history, Northwestern University
