Directed by Sandra Marquez
Archbishop Óscar A. Romero, the Catholic priest of El Salvador who sacrificed his life for the liberation of the poor, is called upon by the heavens for sainthood. A guilt- ridden Romero struggles to accept the call for sainthood while the suffering of people persists. In a magical journey through time, we bear witness to Romero’s acts of defiance as he continues to walk alongside the poor.
The UIC School of Theatre and Music, Teatro Vista, and Centro Romero co-present a special staged reading of Romero, a full-length play by Dr. Xiomara Cornejo, winner of the 2022 KCACTF Region V National Partners of the American Theatre “Outstanding Play” award. Following the reading there will be a talkback moderated by Bryar Barborka, Literary and Casting Associate at Steppenwolf Theatre Company, featuring:
Daysi Funes, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Centro Romero
Miranda Gonzalez, Director, Writer, and Producing Artistic Director of Urban Theater
Dr. Young Richard Kim, Associate Professor and Head, Classics and Mediterranean Studies at UIC
