Dr. Evelyn Alsultany and the cover of her book

“Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion" initiatives have created opportunities for Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) students and Muslim students. Yet such efforts can be rendered meaningless when these same students are targeted for their race, religion, or expression of free speech on college campuses. In this talk, Dr. Evelyn Alsultany will review examples of DEl initiatives that have created more inclusive campuses for MENA and Muslim students. She will also review how such initiatives fail when it comes to the politics of Israel and Palestine on college campuses. Central to this discussion will be the role of crises--such as Donald Trump's "Muslim ban" or the ongoing war in Israel and Gaza - in opening or closing opportunities for inclusion. How are diversity initiatives enhanced and foreclosed by crisis moments? How can university administrators create and maintain inclusive campus environments through politicized crises?

Dr. Alsultany is professor of American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California's Dornsife College and the author of Broken: The Failed Promise of Muslim Inclusion (NYU Press 2022), one of The Chronicle of Higher Education's 10 best scholarly books of 2022.

Presented by UIC The Global Middle East Studies Minor (GMES) & Middle East & Muslim Societies Cluster (MEMS).
