Why do the great theorists of decolonization turn so frequently, and so lovingly, towards Victorian patriarchs? What might we learn about anticolonial thought from nineteenth century British culture, and perhaps more importantly, what do we learn about Britain’s nineteenth century from the project of decolonization?
Nasser Mufti works in the Department of English at the University of Illinois Chicago, where he researches nationalism in the context of nineteenth century British imperialism and twentieth century decolonization. His current research focuses on anticolonial encounters with nineteenth century British literature and culture.
