Chicagoland OpEd Writing Workshop

May 10, 2024

10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Location

Institute for the Humanities, Behavioral Sciences Building

Address

1007 W. Harrison St, Suite 153, Chicago, IL 60607

The Chicagoland chapter of the Scholars Strategy Network and UIC's Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy are excited to host an in-person OpEd writing workshop for all interested researchers in the Chicago area. Chicago Tribune editorial page editor Chris Jones will be joining the workshop to share his expertise and insight into publishing OpEds. Chris will also take questions from participants.

This hands-on workshop will equip scholars with the tools to write compelling, research-based OpEds and get started on putting their first draft together. Participants will learn the ins and outs of crafting a strong OpEd—from finding a timely hook, to composing a clear key message, to structuring the piece for maximum impact—and will then put what they learned into practice by starting to write a draft OpEd, with time to receive feedback. Participants are asked to come prepared with an idea for an OpEd to make the most of the workshop. This workshop is great for all scholars, whether they have written OpEds before or are just starting to think about writing their first.

The OpEd workshop will run from 10am-noon. Participants are invited to stay for a provided lunch after the workshop.
