In ancient Greece, warfare and athletics had many features in common: Both fields of action shared the terminology (for example, agōn could refer to a battle or to an athletic contest), both offered the opportunity to prove one’s strength and bravery, and in Hellenistic gymnasia, athletic training and military exercises took place side by side. Taking these similarities into account, most scholars assume without further consideration that Greek athletics served as preparation for war. But were athletic skills really useful in battle? As the lecture will show, the answers given by ancient authors varied greatly, and the relationship between sport and war appears to be ambivalent.
