National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar for School Teachers
Literature in an Age of Revolutions: Project on Romanticism
June 24-July 19, 1986
Directed by Gene W. Ruoff, Associate Professor of English, UIC
Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, this seminar will invite fifty teachers of high school English for a four-week, thematically focused, national institute on British Romantic literature. Working with four specialists in Romantic literature, a specialist in English education, and a master teacher from a Chicago-area high school, participants will explore the canonical texts of one of the richest and most tumultuous ages of British literature. Participants will attend plenary lectures followed by small-group discussions, enroll in one of four elective seminars, and take part in methods workshops to develop ways and means of teaching Romantic literature in their classes. The institute will be followed by consolidation activities to assist teachers in implementing its results, and dissemination activities to share these results nationally.
