Resident Graduate Scholar

UIC Institute for the Humanities Resident Graduate Scholar Program

The UIC Institute for the Humanities is pleased to continue the Resident Graduate Scholar Program in 2024-2025.

During the academic year 2024-2025, the Institute will offer Resident Graduate Scholar awards for advanced graduate students in the humanities.

Resident Graduate Scholars will be provided office space and administrative support in the Institute for the Humanities. As Resident Scholars they will be invited to participate fully in the Faculty Fellows' lunch seminars and social events. They will also receive an award of $300 for conference travel or other research expenses.

Institute for the Humanities Resident Graduate Scholar status is intended for students in the writing stage of the dissertation process. Applicants must be full- time UIC humanities graduate students in good academic standing.

Criteria for proposal evaluation:

· strength and clarity of the project

· central humanities focus, implications and/or methodology of the project

· likelihood that a Resident Graduate Scholar year will move the project significantly towards completion

In response to questions about the appropriateness of particular projects for fellowships, the Institute has adopted the broad definition used by the National Endowment for the Humanities: "The term 'humanities' includes, but is not limited to, the study and interpretation of the following: language, both modern and classical; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; those aspects of social sciences which have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods; and the study and application of the humanities to the human environment with particular attention to reflecting our diverse heritage, traditions, and history and to the relevance of the humanities to the current conditions of national life."
