"From Citizens to Emigrants: The Japanese American Transnational Generation in the Pacific"
Before World War II, fifty thousand young U.S.-born Japanese Americans migrated to the Japanese Empire to escape the ferocious anti-Japanese movement in the American West. This lecture examines how the histories of Asian exclusion in the United States and Japanese colonial expansion in Asia intersected in the lives of these American migrants who traversed multiple national and colonial borders in the Pacific.
