“Against the Deportation Terror: Tracing the Roots of Immigrant Rights Activism”

This talk explores the connections between immigrant rights advocacy during the Cold War and the more recent fluorescence of a national movement. Specifically, I examine the case of Nicaraguan American labor organizer Humberto Silex, and the multiracial coalition that emerged in South Texas to combat his denaturalization and deportation. While short-lived, this coalition eventually influenced the California Chicano Movement's articulation of a pro-migrant, anti-Migraposition. This position, in turn, became grounds for collaboration between West Coast and East Coast immigrant rights organizations, connecting the struggles of Haitian, Latinx and European migrants into the 1970s and 1980s.
