"The Challenges of Peace Building in El Salvador"
This public lecture will analyze the persistence of social violence and crime in postwar societies in Central America by focusing on the challenges of peace building in El Salvador. More to the point, it will ponder the impact of recent institutional and civil society efforts to reduce violence in that country.
Marcela Smutt is a leading international expert on violence prevention in Latin America. During the past two decades she has conducted extensive research on youth and armed violence, the social costs of violence, citizen’s safety, and human development in El Salvador and other Latin American countries. In her capacity as a United Nations Development Program (UNDP) official she has contributed to dialogue and consensus building and policy formulation for crime prevention and control in El Salvador.
