In addition to providing faculty and graduate students intellectual space to conduct original research, the Institute for the Humanities offers a wide range of public events. Major categories of programs appear below. Specific events can also be found with the Search Bar or the Listing of Events.

Fellows make visible the interdisciplinary community at the University of Illinois at Chicago. While in residence at the Institute, the fellows deliver public lectures on their research.

Working Groups

The UIC Institute for the Humanities encourages interdisciplinary research and intellectual exchange by sponsoring a variety of faculty working groups each year. The format for working groups is flexible and is determined by the faculty coordinators. 

Chancellor's Initiative in the Humanities


The Chancellor’s Initiative in the Humanities is intended to highlight the creative and cutting edge scholarship in the humanities at UIC.  The 2013-15 initiative had as its theme “Food Studies at UIC.”


Each year the Institute for the Humanities brings a scholar to the UIC community whose innovative work has played a crucial role in re-conceptualizing the disciplines of the humanities. This Visiting Fellow presents a public lecture and leads a seminar for faculty and advanced graduate students.

Cutting Edge

The Institute announces Humanities Frontiers (Formerly known as Cutting Edge Issues in the Humanities), small workshops focused on current conversations and debates in the humanities. Discussions will explore cutting edge issues, theoretical problems, new research initiatives, or new methodologies.

Working Groups

The 2018-2019 academic year begins with the Humanities Frontiers (Formerly known as Cutting Edge in the Humanities) conference "Political Futures." This two day event takes place at Room 302 in Tower, Student Center East on October 12-13 and is organized by .


The UIC Institute for the Humanities sponsors a wide array of public interdisciplinary programs through which research in the humanities can become relevant and accessible to the urban public.

The Stanley Fish Lecture

The Stanley Fish Lecture, which occurs every other year, is designed to acknowledge the achievements of Stanley Fish as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at UIC (1999-2004).
