Working

Working Process presents the work of undergrads enrolled in Art 170 Introduction to Filmmaking taught by Institute Graduate Research Assistant Emmanuel Ramos-Barajas. The works being screened, which already showcase a range of confident voices and strong interests, represent the first forays of budding artists into the realm of the moving image and time-based media. Bringing together the course’s emphasis on filmmaking practice with an attentiveness to pressing issues—like land use, climate change, and the role of the individual in these networks—the students have considered historical trends and narratives to imagine new capacities to filmmaking forms. Responding to both past and present and by digging into their own archives and references, the students have made works interested in crafting new future possibilities in filmmaking and in their surroundings.

Emmanuel Ramos-Barajas a scholar, educator, and research-based image maker currently completing his MFA at the School of Art and Art History. He places infrastructures of energy consumption at the center of our experience of “the West.” Working with different imaging technologies, his panoramic collages, experimental videos, and immersive landscapes unmask historical constructions—challenging our sight and interrupting the sublime.
